Frequently asked questions
How do I know if it's time to enroll my loved one in a program?
If your parent is no longer able to manage their free time—no longer going for walks alone or finding joy in activities like reading—an adult day program may be the right solution. When they begin needing help with daily tasks, such as reminders or assistance using the restroom, it may be time to transition from a regular senior center to a more supportive environment. And if you notice one parent becoming increasingly exhausted caring for the other, it's a clear sign that additional help is needed—for everyone's well-being.
What medical or behavioral conditions are accepted at Cari?
Our program is designed to support individuals with early to mid-stage memory loss or dementia. We also welcome participants who use walkers or wheelchairs due to conditions like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), or the effects of a stroke.
My parent is still highly functioning. Will they fit in?
Absolutely! Many of our participants are in the early stages of dementia and continue to enjoy meaningful conversations and engaging activities. One of the greatest benefits of joining Cari is the opportunity to build new friendships in a supportive environment.
My loved one is incontinent. Are they still welcome?
Yes. Incontinence is not a barrier to participation. You provide the undergarments, and our trained staff will provide compassionate assistance.
Are there any conditions that would disqualify someone from joining?
For safety reasons, we cannot accept individuals who are physically aggressive or those who may attempt to leave the facility without supervision. However, individuals who occasionally seek to exit but can be gently redirected are typically welcome.
What types of activities are offered?
We offer a wide range of activities that nurture the mind, body, and spirit. This includes:
Music and seated physical exercise
Brain games and table games
Puzzles and arts & crafts
Group discussions and shared learning
Spiritual time and guided conversations
Activities are always tailored to the unique interests and abilities of those present each day.
Are seniors required to participate in activities?
Participation is always encouraged, but never forced. Some may choose to take a walk, wander, or rest—and we honor those needs. Our role is to guide and gently involve them when they’re ready.
Do you provide food?
Yes! All meals and snacks are lovingly prepared by our staff. We provide breakfast, a morning snack, a hearty lunch, and an afternoon snack—all included at no extra cost.
What are your hours? Is there a minimum or maximum?
Our Adult Day Program runs Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. You can attend for as little as 2 hours or for the entire day—we offer flexible options to fit your family’s needs.
Do you offer bathing or shower services?
Not at this time.
Do you manage medications?
We do not have a nurse on staff. Medications must be prepared by the family. We will securely store them and present them to the participant at the scheduled time.
Do you provide transportation?
Since we are located in California, we recommend using Paratransit or local Dial-a-Ride services designed for individuals with disabilities. These services often provide door-to-door assistance, especially helpful for clients with dementia.
My loved one resists the idea of day care. Is that normal?
Yes, it’s very common—especially in the early stages of dementia when individuals are still aware of their condition. That said, once they experience the welcoming environment and joyful social setting at Cari, most warm up within a couple of visits. We’ll work with you on how to introduce the idea gently.
What is the cost of Adult Day Services?
Occasional care: $45 per hour
Pre-scheduled, full-day care: $150/day (around $15 per hour)
We’ll work with you to find a plan that fits your budget and care needs.
Does Medicare cover this?
Currently, Medicare does not cover Adult Day Services, though it’s being discussed at the federal level. However, long-term care insurance will often cover adult day program fees.
What is your staff-to-participant ratio?
State regulations require a 1:6 ratio, but at Cari, we strive to maintain a more attentive 1:5 ratio to ensure quality care and engagement.
What are your staff qualifications?
We value experience but prioritize heart and compassion. All staff:
Undergo city and state background checks
Maintain First Aid and CPR certification
Receive training to support the physical and emotional needs of our participants
Do you speak languages other than English?
Yes! In addition to English, we have native Mandarin speakers on staff to better serve our diverse community.
